We’ve had an exciting winter at CMHA Central Alberta. The picture at the top of our newsletter is from our Saturday morning Art for Wellness group, 15 or so folks who decided to get together for six weeks to explore their creativity while improving their overall wellness. We also offered a six week Self-Compassion workbook course. Folks bought the workbook and took personal responsibility for going through it at home and then using our two hours together to discuss things more deeply and learn from each other.
We’re also working hard to create more opportunities for people with lived experience with mental illness, either as individuals or as family members to become part of the CMHA family in new ways. We are working toward having a fully functioning “Recovery College” in Central Alberta and knowledgeable peers are central to that vision.
Our two drop-in peer support groups, Caregiver Connections,and Friendship Circle are stronger than ever. We’re excited to announce that we have formal approval to expand our Caregiver Connections group, Initially, it was designed to meet the needs of parents and caregivers of children and youth. Caregivers of adults are now welcome in the group.
And, of course, we finalized our Spring Schedule for Art of Friendship, Wellness Recovery Action Planning, (WRAP) Living Life to the Full and other popular CMHA courses and workshops. You can see our Spring schedule here. For this edition of our newsletter, we thought we’d tell you a bit more about WRAP.
The Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP®) is a personalized wellness and recovery system born out of and rooted in the principle of self-determination. WRAP® participants create a personalized recovery system of wellness tools and action plans to achieve a self-directed wellness vision despite life’s daily challenges. The course is offered free of charge.
The eight week course is designed to:
- Decrease day-to-day difficulties at home, school, or work;
- Increase personal empowerment;
- Improve quality of life; and
- Assist people in achieving their own life goals and dreams.
Thousands of people, world-wide, have successfully used what they learned during a WRAP course to live happier and more satisfying lives while improving connections to their families, their friends, and their community. And although it was initially designed for people with mental health concerns research has shown that WRAP is also effective for just about anyone who struggles with the day-to-day management of their lives at work, at school, or at home.
This spring we have two WRAP courses.
- March 18 – May 13, 2019 (Mondays) (no class Apr 22) 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm
- April 11 – May 30, 2019 (Thursdays) 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
WRAP, like all CMHA courses, are open to the community-at-large. We have found that some people have a better learning experience when CMHA staff can talk to them about their expectations and specific needs. We can help people choose the right course, make recommendations, and answer questions. You can call us at 403-342-2266.
As CMHA embraces the future with new and innovative programming, our financial need outstrips our funding. People who donate to CMHA make it possible for us to continue to be leaders in mental health and well-being in Central Alberta.
