Suicide Intervention and Prevention Programs

Working with the Centre for Suicide Prevention (CSP), CMHA Central Alberta Region educates people with the information, knowledge and skills necessary to respond to people at risk of suicide. CMHA and CSP teach prevention because prevention is the only solution to suicide.

Currently CMHA Central Region offers four different workshops:

 

  •  A two day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshop
  • A half day ASIST Tuneup workshop
  • A half day Tattered Teddies workshop, and
  • A half day Straight Talk.

Each course is offered several times a year. Unless noted, all workshops are taught in downtown Red Deer at the CMHA Learning Annex, First Red Deer Place (ATB Building), 4911 – 51 Street, Suite 400.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

  • Attending this two-day course will train you to intervene with an individual who is suicidal.
  • ASIST is an intensive, interactive, and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize and review risk, and intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. It is by far the most widely used, acclaimed and researched suicide intervention training workshop in the world.
  • Ages 18+. Participants can include but not limited to: parents and caregivers; natural helpers and advisors; educators and ministers; health practitioners; justice, law enforcers, emergency workers, and community volunteers.
  • All participants who complete the course (14 hours of instruction time) will receive a certificate of participation.
  • The two day ASIST training  fee  is $250

  • April 27 & 28, 2017 (Thursday & Friday)  8:30 – 4:30 both days
  • July 13 & 14, 2017 (Thursday & Friday)  8:30 – 4:30 both days
  • September 28 & 29, 2017 (Thursday & Friday )  8:30 – 4:30 both days

ASIST Tune-up

  • This half-day workshop is only for people with a valid ASIST 11 certificate. This will allow you to renew your ASIST certification for a further two years. We can check with the Centre for Suicide Prevention to confirm that you have a valid ASIST 11 certificate.
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Tune-Up is a half-day refresher course developed by LivingWorks Education for participants who have completed ASIST. The workshop offers participants an opportunity to review the Pathway for Assisting Life Model, discuss successes and challenges in using the model, and clarify concepts covered within the model.
  • Ages 18+. The ASIST Tune-Up workshop is designed for professionals, caregivers, and individuals who may work or be in contact with people-at-risk for suicide and who have taken the two day ASIST workshop within the last three years. Proof of prior ASIST attendance is required to attend the ASIST Tune-Up.
  • The fee for ASISt Tune-up is $90

Straight Talk

  • Straight Talk is an interactive half-day workshop created for individuals working with youth aged 12 to 18.
  • Straight Talk encompasses the developmental, cognitive, and emotional differences found within this age group in presenting strategies to strengthen the protective factors of youth at risk of suicide. Relevant intervention strategies are explored through videos and case studies.
  • Intervention approaches build on the skills taught in the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) as they apply to youth.
  • Ages 18+. This workshop will benefit any adult working with youth aged 12 – 18.
  • Participants can include but not limited to: parents and caregivers; family and friends; natural helpers and advisors; educators and ministers; health practitioners; justice, law enforcers, emergency workers, and community volunteers.
  • All participants will receive a participation certificate upon completing 4 hours of instruction.
  • The fee for Straight Talk is $100

Tattered Teddies

 

 

  • Suicidal behaviour in children age 12 or younger is a subject of growing concern for those who work with children. Suicidal thoughts and attempts in children have sometimes been overlooked, denied or ignored. Tattered Teddies is an interactive half-day workshop which examines warning signs in a child and explores intervention strategies through stories and case studies.
  • Intervention approaches build on the skills taught in the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) as they apply to children.
  • Ages 18+This workshop provides information and offers practical approaches for those working with children who are working with children who are age 12 or younger and who may be at risk of suicide.
  • Participants can include but not limited to: parents and caregivers; family and friends; natural helpers and advisors; educators and ministers; health practitioners; justice, law enforcers, emergency workers, and community volunteers.
  • All participants will receive a participation certificate upon completing 4 hours of instruction hours.
  • The fee for tattered teddies is $100
